From the beginning, computers have been used for making practical things. They've also been used for entertainment, and for creating amazing new ideas. The first general-purpose programmable computer was Colossus, which went into operation at Bletchley Park on June 18, 1944. The purpose of this computer was to break German wartime codes. In the years immediately after World War II, computers were extremely expensive. But by the 1950's computer use began to spread beyond academia and the military-industrial complex to other areas of society including business and research. One important milestone in computing history was 1958 when John Backus created Fortran 1 (FORmula TRANslator). This was an early high-level programming language that allowed for more easily understandable code than earlier designs. In the 1960's two important new architectures emerged: The first "microprocessor" was designed by Ted Hoff and Federico Faggin. This microprocessor, known as the Intel 4004, was released in 1971 and had a very small instruction set encoded onto silicon which allowed millions of copies to be made cheaply. The 4004 went on to become the first microcomputer in 1972 when it was incorporated into the Scelbi-8H computer kit sold by Intel's customer, the Japanese company Busicom. The Scelbi-8H kit sold for $400 and came with 4K of RAM. It was the first system to be widely described as a personal computer. In 1973, Robert W. Taylor started work at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) in Palo Alto, California. This center was intended to conduct research for the benefit of the company's product development efforts. One of its most important innovations was a graphical user interface (GUI), which made it much easier for users to operate a computer without knowing a lot about how it worked. The Xerox Alto had been designed by Bob Taylor's colleague at PARC, Butler Lampson, who is considered one of the fathers of UNIX operating system design. This design differed from other systems in that it provided a graphical user interface which allowed users to work interactively with a computer without knowing a lot about how it worked internally. Today, many of the traditional ideas of commercial operating systems have been replaced by GUI technologies. The first computers for home use were introduced in the early 1970s by companies such as DEC and Osborne. These machines were designed to be appliances which offered a function such as playing games, but were not aggressively marketed for this purpose. In 1974, IBM released the System/370 which was designed from the start for use by large organizations. It was one of the first big computers to incorporate microprocessors into its design from the beginning.
